Why Small Pet Businesses Stay Small

Lack of Digital Presence

A significant factor keeping small pet businesses from growing is the absence of a solid digital presence. It may seem surprising, but 40% of small businesses, mostly retail stores, do not have a website. Many owners feel a website is unnecessary, often claiming that social media profiles are enough to attract customers. Ironically, these same business owners regularly use other websites to find goods and resources for their businesses. So, why are they hesitant, or perhaps even fearful, to invest in a website for themselves?

Furthermore, 75% of businesses that do have websites have not updated them in over three years, and most of these businesses are owned by individuals over the age of 45. The main reason cited for this neglect is a lack of time. However, I believe this reluctance often stems from discomfort with the technology itself. These businesses also worry about the cost of maintaining a site, but the longer they remain stuck in indecision, the more they risk losing customers and future growth opportunities.

So, what happens if your business falls into one of these categories?

A 2024 Retail Dive article, supported by Gartner research, suggests that consumer use of social media will decrease by 50% by 2025.

Customers increasingly distrust social media, fearing that the integration of generative AI creates misleading and harmful information.

Today’s consumers are looking for human connection combined with the convenience of a personable, well-maintained digital platform.

Whether your business operates out of a brick-and-mortar store or solely online, your website communicates your values, your vision, and the unique products or services you offer. Consumers are savvy, and so are you—when you search for products or information, what leads you to make a purchase? Now, imagine potential customers visiting your outdated or non-existent site – ahhh, sorry, you have already lost this potential new customer. What if they feel the brand offerings listed on your outdated, unmanaged site are easily purchased at ‘cheaper’ big box retailers or websites, or what if they felt that the services you have listed on your current sight are lacking information that is important to them in helping them choose you as their go to versus your competition?

Ask Yourself the What If questions!

  • What if your social media profile got hacked and you lost everything you’ve built?
  • What if creating a true community that supports your business is more accessible than you think?
  • What if you used your website to start building that supportive community?
  • What if it gets to be easy?

The Choice is Yours

Small pet businesses stay small because they hesitate to embrace the digital tools that can fuel growth. A professional, up-to-date website is essential—not just for showcasing your products and services, but for building trust and staying competitive as consumer behavior evolves. Relying solely on social media, especially with its uncertain future, puts your business at risk. Taking control of your digital presence may seem daunting, but what if it could be easier than you think? By starting small and committing to gradual improvements, you can create a thriving, supportive community for your business. The choice is yours—remain stagnant or embrace the tools that will help your business grow.
